Most of us remember some TV closing logos that are a bit scary. As adults, they're typically not scary, but imagine if you were 7 years old seeing them on TV in a dark room! The CLG Wiki covers this subject as well. I will be comparing my rating to that of the CLG Wiki.
Here's the scale I use:
0-4 - None
5-9 - Minimal
10-29 - Low
30-54 - Medium
55-84 - High
85-100 - Nightmare
Viacom V of Doom (Used 1976-1985)
My rating: 68 / High. CLG : (~50-90) Medium to nightmare (most variants)
One of the most well-known scary logos out there, and I'm not going to lie, it's pretty rough. The music combined with the big "V" zooming in is pretty unsettling. It's not a pretty "V", either.
Screen Gems S From Hell (Used 1965-1974)
My rating: 32 / Medium-Low. CLG : (~40) Around Medium (most variants)
This is another very well known scary logo. It's far less scary than the V of Doom, though the Moog synthesizer is a bit unsettling. Still, not that bad.
Children's Television Workshop Snake (Used 1978-1983)
My rating: 55 / High-Medium. CLG: (~45) Medium
The dark design and unsettling letter appearance combine to make a fairly scary logo, especially for a children's TV company.
NET House logo (more common variant, with line drawn over houses) (Used 1969-1971)
My rating: 61 / High. CLG: (~55) Medium to high
The appearance of the letters as well as the theme combine to make this quite a scary logo.
NET House logo (early variant, "NATIONAL EDUCATIONAL TELEVISION") (Used 1968-1969)
My rating: 81 / High-Nightmare. CLG: (~55) Medium to High
Same as the other version, but add a slightly scarier sounding announcer and the very unsettling font of the "NATIONAL EDUCATIONAL TELEVISION" (especially the L's and V) and this logo is one of the scariest logos ever put on television.
TAT Communications Company (Used 1979-1982)
My rating: 96 / Nightmare. CLG: (~45) Low to High
This is as rare as it gets, and this is as bad as it gets. CLG finds this logo to be pretty standard on scariness, but I find it terrifying. Yeah, I can watch it now (and its cheesiness is quite funny), but if I were a kid I probably would have peed my pants at this one. The giant star flying in, the creepy synth theme, the weird font, and the downright ugly "TAT" letters (especially that A) combine to make this a real s***show of a logo.
Here's a pretty accurate re-make (the actual logo has only partially been found). Worth a watch just so you can see how scary a TV logo can get.
